Most people don't think about the holidays as being violent.  Most, in fact don't have a lot of time to think of anything other than the holidays themselves.  Thanksgiving and Christmas times are statically considered one of the most dangerous time of officers (it's already starting to show this year as the fallen officer's list for 2000 grows everyday).  People become depressed about numerous things, families become very stressed, alcohol is more commonly accepted during the holidays, and money becomes more of an issue than normal.  Those factors alone are a dangerous mixture and the one person called on every time one of these situations escalates is a police officer.  Most of the time they to have family awaiting their return and sometimes it doesn't always happen that way.  Keep your thoughts on your community and officers this holiday season.  Show them you appreciate their efforts.  Read on to find out how!!

"A Cops Special Day"

Yesterday was a special day for me
Yesterday I got a call
Yesterday I saved a life
Yesterday I made a sacrifice
Today Is a special day for me
Today I got my picture in the paper
Today everyone's coming to visit
Today I am a hero
Tomorrow is a special day for me
Tomorrow I'll get a parade
Tomorrow all my friends will carry me
Tomorrow I'll rest eternally!

A few years ago, a widow of a fallen officer wanted to remember her husband and all other officers who have died in the line of duty.  Her answer, a single blue bulb in her porch light during the holiday season.  From there the story and tradition was born.  I saw this story in the VA Sheriff's magazine a couple years back and have participated every year.  Cops has sponsored this program as well and in some towns, cities and municipalities they even have various contest with business, home owners, students, and parade participants.  The ultimate goal is to remember those who have fallen, so we may stand!

Every year hundreds of law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty trying to protect us all.  Let us not forget the sacrifice they made.  This holiday season I challenge all of you to help me remember by placing a single blue light in your window, on you tree or in your yard.
